SemesterII Week#9 Honors College Experience
On March 23 and 24, I attended the Tennessee Regional Conference for Phi Theta Kappa. From 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. on Friday, and from 8 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Saturday. This is 25hrs and completes my requirements for the semester. I had a blast, as I always do when PTK is involved. I spent the weekend with my old chapter as an Alumni and helped them with several chapter needs. The first was a Chandler Cheer. Chandler bear is the spirit bear for the Tennessee Region. At each regional convention perform a cheer made up by each chapter that includes all the pillars of PTK, which include leadership, fellowship, scholarship, and service. At roll call the second day each team preforms their skits and the judge make a decision on who's was the best. The chapter that was appointed winner gets to keep chandler bear until the next regional convention. This is a very competitive event. Chandler is very sought after.
The next thing I done was attend several breakout sessions that went over a wide variety of things, like how to be a better leader. I always walk away with more knowledge than I walked into the breakout sessions with.
The last thing that I got ask to do while there was fill in for the Position of Vice President West during the regional officers elections because the VP West transferred a semester early and was unable to be at the event. This was exciting to me because I ran for VP East in 2016 and was unsuccessful at obtaining the position. During the transfer of leadership roles I was appointed to place the Regional Officer Medallion on the new VP West.
In 2016, I became president of our chapter of PTK, one of the things that I noticed that could be improved on was fellowship of the chapters within our region. I planned at day trip to Cummin Falls in middle Tennessee. As of Saturday, this was made into an annual trip for Tennessee Chapters. I never thought that a trip I planned would turn into an annual event, but the outcome of the event proved to grow from the first year to the second year. We started a Facebook page so we could set a date and everyone interested in going would be able to keep up with the date and what if any changes to the trip would be announced on the page.
I got a chance this weekend to reflect on the things that I am currently doing and am very pleased with where I stand today. PTK along with college has turned me into the man that I have always been afraid of being. It has allowed me to overcome some of my fears and enabled me to become a very out going individual. I have been very blessed the past four years. I hope that the next four years of my life prove to just as successful.
